As the cab pulled onto the freeway, she reached into her purse and pulled out a small lacquer box. She opened it, very carefully, and pulled out a diamond ring and a plain gold band. She slipped the first, then the second onto her left hand. She could almost feel and hear a click as the rings settled into place.
